Stewardship

Stewardship in business is an important measurement of companies’ net impact on the planet, and can be the purpose of the company or built into how the business operates on a day-to-day basis. Most clearly, businesses that provide a renewable energy source for the market, such as a solar power company or a wind power provider, incorporate environmental stewardship into their company’s product or service. Many companies exist solely to increase the level of environmental stewardship in business. This includes organizations that provide business recycling, assistance in implementing business-wide energy efficiency measures, and install solar power or wind power systems. Other businesses provide e-waste recycling and computer recycling services.

Another example of stewardship in business includes innovative products that are made with recycled materials. From sunglasses to water bottles to clothing, products that incorporate recycled materials have helped business owners build entire enterprises with the conservation of natural resources at their core.

Most companies concerned with environmental stewardship change the practices within their organization to be more environmentally friendly. Implementing a recycling program, seeking better energy efficiency, finding ways to conserve natural resources in their production methods, or finding a renewable energy source to power their operations are a few ways companies can have a more environmentally conscious business.

Other corporations implement environmental stewardship into their business by purchasing renewable energy credits to offset their carbon footprint. Some companies also invest a percentage of their revenue into nonprofits that are dedicated to conservation of natural resources, biodiversity and open spaces.
